Destination: Mount Mitchell. Mode of motivation: feet. Results: twenty- five gabbing girls, and two bedraggled boys. (Dr. Snyder, upon reaching the falls, de cided on the advisibility of returning from whence he came . . . Howerton lobby.) After much scrambling and climbing, to say nothing of fording streams and shin ning up trees, the energetic bunch of Mon treater’s reached the Graybeard Waterfalls . . . the place designated for lunch. Feel ing much better after eating something more substantial than chocolate bars, the group merrily wended their way to the parkway, via the top of a mountain! Less merrily than before they groped their way through the fog and rain which seemed to pei'sist. Yet, with the determination of soldiers out to win a battle, they plodded on. Finally the top was reached. A few ran, more walked, some even crawled, but most rode the last remaining mile. However, the reward was great, for food awaited the conquerers. Devouring it quickly, the tired but happy bunch (twenty-five gabbing girls, two fagged-out boys, and one har- rassed bus-driver) boarded the bus and headed back for Montreat College. A suc cessful day . . . even for those who rode all the way and were there to meet the hikers. Eleven Girls Awarded Scholarships The Living Endowment Fund was origi nated in 1958 for the purpose of under writing the Self-Help Scholarship program. In the first year thirty-six students were awarded scholarships. Co-ordinator for the Living Endowment Fund is Miss Elizabeth Hoyt. This year two of the Living Endowment Fund’s Self-Help Scholarships were named in honor of faculty members who have rendered long terms of service to the col lege: Miss Helen Miles, who served on the faculty for a period of thirty years, and Miss Zoulean Anderson, who served a per iod of sixteen years. This program is a wonderful way in which the Montreat College Alumni have the opportunity of increasing the success of this our college, Montreat Junior College. Grier Davis, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville, has ac cepted the call to become president of the Mountain Retreat Association. Dr. Davis, a longtime trustee and director of Montreat affairs, is the third man to hold the office of president in the history of the college. His predecessors were Dr. R. C. Anderson and Dr. J. R.
